Upon watching The Odyssey, I have so many thoughts and intriguing insights and I managed to trace them down to something I was always wondering; gods. Not a god, but Greek gods. Also, Greeks weren’t the only ones with polytheism. The existence of gods certainly tingled my brain for a very long time.

How come we, as species, existed for so many years just to end up limiting ourselves in every possible way? And especially in making our belief system so narrow and singled out? How come multiple gods were worshipped all over the world (and in some countries it’s still normal) and suddenly it all got reduces to one god. Even for Greeks who are such an antient civilization with one of the richest histories in the world. How come when you go to Greece there is a special energy surrounding those temples and if you even stepped your foot at the base of Olympus you could feel something different about it? I know I did. I was always fascinated by it. And what happened with those gods?

We all know what happened in the meantime; mostly Christianity or some form of it took over, religious wars were won, views and programs are being shoved down our throats. But what happened with gods? How can a civilization that was guided by said gods, just abandon the entire idea of it and accept the monotheism overnight and are there any Greek people who still believe in Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, Artemis? The same question can be imposed to Slavic belief system. Imagine the level of brainwashing it took to actually make you renounce something your ancestors believed in and most likely experienced?

But my question is not what happened to people, cause we all know that humans need something to believe in and in contrary something to rule over humans, but what happened to gods? Are they still there? Do they still stir the sea, send the thunder and weigh in on wars? If we abandoned them, did they also abandon us? I believe that polytheism is more natural to humans than monotheism. Because one god cannot rule all. I don’t think our ancestors were insane to believe and respect the gods. Because if you think about it, it was just honouring the nature, the planet, the cosmos. I think we made gods furious and now we are suffering and will continue to for as long as we exist. If Odysseus had a Poseidon’s curse, then we have a curse of all gods. Not just the 12, but entire cosmos is furious with us.

My personal belief is a force greater than gods, greater than existence itself. I don’t call it a god, but the power it holds rules over anything. It’s the pure energy. The energy that created gods and all there is. It’s not mono and not poly, it’s everything. I’m sure that any kind of belief you have cannot and should not rule over you. A belief shouldn’t have a set of rules and regulations with prize and punishment. What we do and what we chose to do should be the greatest set of rules and regulations we will ever need. Your belief system should feel natural to you. It should make you feel like you actually belong somewhere and it should make you look inside yourself and be kinder to yourself and other people. Naturally.

I do believe there are deities, but I don’t think they are as strict as religion portrays them. But I think I answered my own question; the gods are still out there but they are not having fun at the Olympus, they are so angry. And with every right.
